Haynes-Brungard House
About this Stop
This house was built in 1927 for Howell H. Haynes of Bristol, Tennessee. He was one of three friends who came to Labelle for hunting trips. The other two of this group were John Caldwell (The Caldwell Home Place is stop 10 on the tour) and Benjamin Dulaney who owned the house at 450 Main Street. The friends brought neighboring properties for their families' winter trips to Florida. This house was bought by Dr. Otis Brungard in 1948. He used the house for his medical practice. His daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Brungard, took over her father's practice when he died in 1951. For years, Dr. Brungard was LaBelle's only doctor and one of the few women practicing medicine in Florida. Her medical equipment was donated to the Museum of Medical History at Florida SouthWestern State College. The video “the doctor's office”, available through this link provides more information about Dr. Brungard.
